Applicants must possess a valid Commercial Class 2B or greater with air brake endorsement driver’s license including a medical examiner’s certificate issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Skill in the operation of trucks and other automotive equipment under all types of weather conditions. Good knowledge of traffic rules; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Assists in unloading/loading trucks and general laboring tasks. Frequently required to lift heavy materials in excess of 50 pounds while working in adverse weather conditions.

Supervision:

Works under the general supervision of the working foreman or the assigned supervisor.

Performs responsible functions in accordance with established procedures and techniques, requiring some independent judgment. May supervise laborer (s) in loading/unloading of trucks.

Job Environment:

Work is performed in all weather conditions with moderate exposure to hazards such as load equipment and chemicals.

Operates a variety of light and heavy trucks and light equipment.

Operates hand tools including pick and shovel; operates power tools. Transport employees, tools and materials to a job site; operates all other related equipment in maintenance projects.

Makes frequent routine contacts with the general public requiring courtesy in responding to complaints makes periodic contact with other town departments.

Essential Functions:

Loads and unloads trucks and sanders.

Operates equipment, such as small mowers and vehicles in connection with public works projects including, but not limited to, building, paving, and repairing streets and sidewalks, removing snow and ice, picking up litter.

Works with field crews and participates in repairs/maintenance.

Spreads sand and salt during snow and ice emergencies.

May be assigned to perform minor preventive maintenance on equipment and miscellaneous maintenance duties and repair of small trucks and equipment.

Required Knowledge/Skills

Position requires general knowledge equivalent to high school diploma.

Physical and Environmental Standards:

Duties require frequent and extended periods of outside work, subject to all weather conditions and extremes; continuous walking, standing, climbing and frequent periods requiring sustained uncomfortable physical positions; regular and sustained periods of strenuous physical exertion, requiring the ability to lift, carry and position heavy objects utilizing proper body mechanics and techniques; operation of equipment which causes loud noise levels and high vibrations; may require the exercise of caution when operating equipment or handling chemicals or other toxic materials; utilization of proper sanitary precautions when handling trash, garbage and other potential hazards.
