Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA (5,400 pop.), is seeking a talented municipal leader with a strong financial acumen who has experience managing building projects and is a collaborative problem-solver and transparent communicator to serve as Town Administrator. The successful candidate must be able to work with the town’s stakeholders to prioritize the town’s needs and develop a financially responsible plan the community can afford and support. Manchester-by-the-Sea is a classic New England coastal community located on Cape Ann along the North Shore, 30 miles northeast of Boston. It has a walkable downtown, a bustling harbor, nearly 13 miles of shoreline, two exits off Route 128, and a commuter rail station. Manchester-by-the-Sea has an Open Town Meeting form of government with a Town Administrator and five-member Select Board. It has an AAA rating, and FY25 budget of $42.3M. Preferred candidates will have an advanced degree, preferably in public administration or a related field. Preferred candidates must have experience as a Town Administrator/Manager or head of a significant department in a complex municipal organization, be a team player, be eager to engage, interact and listen to the community, have project management experience, have a practical/common sense approach, have familiarity with unique issues facing coastal communities, be a clear and concise communicator, foster a cohesive working environment, embrace being visible in the community, and understand working with a regional school system and within small-town government.
Annual salary: $180K+/- DOQ. AA/EOE.
