The Superintendent of Outdoor Works assists the Director of Public Works in planning, coordinating, and supervising the operation and maintenance of the city’s outdoor infrastructure, excluding public buildings and the wastewater treatment plant. This position oversees the Building Maintenance Supervisor, Highways and Bridges Foreman, Refuse Foreman, Recycling Coordinator, General Construction Supervisor, Automotive Supervisor, City Forester, and Safety Officer.

Key responsibilities include directing roadway and sidewalk maintenance, solid waste and recycling operations, parks and grounds maintenance, tree care, snow and ice removal, contractor oversight, project planning, budgeting, and ensuring compliance with municipal, state, and federal regulations. The role also requires collaboration with city departments, public agencies, contractors, and residents.

Qualified candidates should possess strong leadership, organizational, communication, and project management skills, with the ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment. A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have seven to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in public works, infrastructure management, or a related field.

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position with a combination of office and field work, including emergency response responsibilities as needed
