The town of Sherborn Recreation Commission is seeking a part-time Facilities Director. The Facilities Director is responsible for providing safe, playable and fun recreation facilities for the residents of Sherborn.

The Recreation Commission oversees approximately 20 acres of sports fields used for soccer, lacrosse, baseball and other sports. Additionally the recreation department has responsibility for tennis and pickleball facilities, the Farm Pond Reservation, a skate park, a basketball area and the town playground. This is a “hands-on” role requiring frequent visits to inspect conditions, oversee third party workers, and perform select maintenance as needed. The Facilities Director is responsible for scheduling, planning and budgeting required work throughout the calendar year although workload varies by season. The normal work schedule can include weekdays, evenings and weekends on a part-time basis.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Develop and coordinate organic turf maintenance programs. Oversee the application of treatments and adjust the plan as needed.
  • Work closely with the Recreation Program Administrator to determine needs for both in-town and out-of-town programs including field use and scheduling.
  • Ascertain field conditions to provide updates on field availability and closures.
  • Maintain relationships with various external suppliers/contractors required to perform activities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the Sherborn Recreation Commissioners, residents, sports teams, and other town Recreation Departments and professional organizations.
  • Source and order equipment, supplies, and materials at favorable prices.
  • Participate in meetings with Town Boards and Recreation Commissioners.
  • Light maintenance work including painting, repairs, field preparation, moving equipment, etc.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of departmental operating budget and revolving funds. Develop operational and capital facilities budgets. Adapt budgets based on conditions.
  • On-site at facilities as needed, otherwise work from home.

Core skills and requirements:

  • Experience with turf maintenance and annual treatments including organic treatments, crabgrass & weed control, patching, field rotation and seasonal care.
  • Knowledge of youth sports (soccer, LAX, baseball) field layout, sizes, out-of-bounds areas and on-field equipment.
  • Experience with the workings of a municipality including contracting, RFP development, vendor selection and funding.
  • Experience working with DPW (or similar) to plan and resource maintenance and capital project.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repairs of various recreational facilities (tennis, baseball, playgrounds, etc).
  • Valid driver’s license and utility vehicle.
  • Strong organizational and management skills.
  • Effective decision-making, problem solving, and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
