The town of Sturbridge is seeking applicants for the position of Recreation Director. The Director is hired by the Recreation Committee and is responsible to implement policies created by that committee. The Director reports day-to-day to the Town Administrator and is part of the executive staff team. In addition to the general duties outlined below, the Director is responsible for a number of annual events and activities and serves on several internal staff teams. The successful candidate will be expected to work Thursday evenings throughout the summer and Sundays – in person and/or on call from June through October overseeing the farmers’ market along with other evening and weekends as needed depending on dates of events. Further, many activities happen during school vacations and summer months – and the Director will have to plan personal vacations accordingly. Some sample activities include – but are not limited to – the following:
Coordinating all Summer Recreation Programs
Overseeing bus trips to Boston, Ski Mountain, and New York City both in the spring and at the holidays
Running a Spring Free Fun outdoor series hosted with local businesses
Coordinating public CPR/First Aid/AED classes
Working with all local youth sports leagues
Coordinating with the School Department use of all fields
Running outdoor competitive basketball
Coordinating and attending the annual Town Takeover by the Woosox
Coordinating Indoor Adult Recreation leagues
Leading the Scarecrow contest
Running the annual tree lighting the day after Thanksgiving
Leading Spooky Nights Halloween home decorating contest
Leading the annual Light UP Sturbridge Holiday decorating contest
Responsible for Town Common activities
Oversee Town Common Ice Rink
Coordinate the annual Town-Wide Yard Sale
Coordinate usage of town owned fields and the Cedar Recreation area.
The position also takes the lead on any facilities upgrade for fields and the recreation center – i.e. putting fencing projects out to bid, leading handicapped ADA accessibility, etc.
