The city of Newburyport is seeking an Assistant Animal Control Officer (ACO) to provide emergency animal control coverage when the full-time Animal Control Officer is out (i.e. sick or on vacation) during the week and/or weekends and to conduct patrols as needed. The on-call Assistant ACO will be available to provide emergency coverage for Animal Control services during the workweek (Monday through Friday) to respond to calls in either Newburyport or West Newbury when the full-time ACO is unavailable or indisposed for whatever reason.

The Assistant Animal Control Officer provides for the protection of people, animals and property from disturbances or physical harm resulting from the owners neglect or failure to adhere to the requirements of the animal control ordinance and state laws governing domestic causes; serves as Municipal Animal Inspector for rabies control in the domestic animal population; assists as needed with annual barn inspections and maintains and improves upon efficiency and effectiveness of the areas under his/her control .

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED with the completion of a comprehensive course acceptable to the Health Department and over two years of experience with animals and animal owners; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training; and a valid driver’s license.

This is a non-union, 19 hour a week position. Hourly rate of $18.00.
