Job Description
The town of North Reading Water department is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time (40 hour) Maintenance Craftsman position.
The Water/Maintenance Craftsman will operate one or more types of automotive equipment in the light, medium and heavy class and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations. Performs skilled labor duties in the construction, repair, and maintenance of water & sewer systems, highways & traffic systems, and buildings, parks & cemeteries. Performs related public works project work as required. Performs skilled & manual labor work on the maintenance and replacement of water distribution system components, including water mains, water services, fire hydrants, water meters and appurtenances. Responsible for responding to emergency conditions at the treatment plants, pumping stations, distribution system and other Water Department emergencies as necessary. Performs additional duties relating to the operation and maintenance of the water system, including collecting water samples, flushing fire hydrants, locating and marking water services, and overseeing work performed by Contractors to ensure compliance with the standards of the Town of North Reading. Assists in the construction, repair and maintenance of highways, drains, water & sewer systems, parks, cemeteries, and buildings and other City property requiring a high degree of skill.
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, three to five years related experience; Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License. Experience in the operation of light, medium and heavy automotive equipment and completion of a standard grade school course; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of a minimum of a Grade 1 Water Distribution license in Massachusetts or ability to obtain this license within one year of hire.
