The town of Brookfield, Massachusetts (3,450 pop.), is seeking an experienced, hands-on public works professional to lead its Highway Department, which is responsible for highways, sidewalks, and grounds. Rich in American history, Brookfield is located in central Massachusetts just 20 miles west of the city of Worcester and 30 miles east of the city of Springfield. With a short drive to I-90, it’s just over an hour to Boston and under an hour to Hartford, Connecticut.

The Highway Superintendent is appointed by, and reports to a three-member Select Board and oversees a staff comprised of an Administrative Assistant, a Foreman and two Operators. The full-time staff is supplemented by seasonal part-time employees and contracted services. The department’s operating budget is approximately $500,000.

The ideal candidate will be an active and hands-on working superintendent. Minimum requirements: high school diploma; satisfactory driving record with CDL and applicable hoisting licenses; five or more years of progressively responsible experience. Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering may substitute for up to two years of experience.
