The town of Great Barrington is seeking a Health Inspector to join our team and play a key role in supporting the health and safety of the community. This role is both technical and deeply human. As a Health Inspector, you will help ensure safe environments while guiding residents and businesses with professionalism, empathy, and respect. You will be a visible ambassador of the town’s values—helping others navigate requirements with confidence and understanding.
Position Details
- Status: Full Time (35 hours), Non-Union, Non-Exempt
- Department: Department of Health
- Compensation: $25.00 – $30.00 per hour

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct health and safety inspections and enforce state and local public health regulations
- Take the time to educate as a first response. Apply standards fairly, consistently, and transparently without punitive measures.
- Educate and guide residents, property owners, and businesses toward compliance
- Investigate public health concerns and nuisance complaints
- Serve as the town’s MDAR Animal Inspector
- Review applications and issue health-related permits and licenses
- Maintain accurate records and participate in ongoing professional training
- Attend occasional evening Board of Health meetings and occasional weekend inspections
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in health inspection, code enforcement, or a related regulatory field
- Strong communication skills and sound judgment
- Ability to explain requirements clearly, calmly, and respectfully
- Commitment to equity, consistency, and service excellence
- Ability to obtain required certifications within 120 days of hire
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
