The town of Great Barrington seeks qualified applicants to fill the position for the Health Inspector. The Health Inspector, under the general direction of the Health Agent, is responsible for performing public health inspections to ensure compliance with state and local sanitary codes. Responsibilities include; conducting routine inspections of the 130 plus food establishments located in Great Barrington and Housatonic, investigation of sanitary code and general nuisance complaints, enforcement of local Board of Health regulations and health related bylaws, and to assist the Health Agent in operating the Health Department.

The position requires;

  • Moderate physical effort for the onsite inspections.
  • The ability to interpret and understand regulations and enforce them firmly, impartially, and respectfully.
  • A Manager’s Food Safety certification.
  • A valid driver’s license and independent means of transportation.
  • Availability for weekend and evening inspections and occasional meetings.

The preferred candidate would have strong communication skills both orally and in writing, with the ability to prepare detailed reports dealing with inspection results and correction orders. Compensation for this position is $25 – $30.00 per hour, depending on experience, for up to 32 hours a week and includes benefits.
