Southborough, Mass., (pop. 10,450; FY24 budget $58.26 million) seeks a Fire Chief with superior leadership skills who can work collaboratively with town administration and union membership. Experienced in employee relations and collective bargaining with demonstrable ability in building strong relationships. A community leader with a strong customer service focus in the delivery of municipal fire and emergency management services. Candidates should embrace transparency including via use of data analytics and performance metrics, public outreach, and community engagement. Works under the policy direction of the Select Board and under the rules and regulations of Mass. general laws. Among position responsibilities are: Overseeing and managing the Fire Department and EMS; supervising full-time staff, call personnel, and volunteers; establishing policies and procedures; preparing and managing the department’s budget and capital improvement plan, and long-range master plan. The department includes 27 men and women, both full-time and on-call, including the Chief (who has full appointing authority for all staff), five Captains, and three Lieutenants. There are 10 firefighter/paramedics, three firefighter/EMTs, and four call firefighter/EMTs as well as a Business Administrator. The department’s FY24 budget is $2.53 million.

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in fire science, public administration, or a related field. A minimum of seven to 10 years of firefighting experience, including seven years in a full-time supervisory command position as an officer in a fire department. Fire Chief – Mass. credentialed.
