Position Purpose: The Environmental Planner position provides support, coordination, and professional management for the city’s Conservation Commission in carrying out its mandate and mission to protect the community’s natural resources including its biodiversity, unique natural areas, wetlands, coastal beaches and other water resources. This includes assisting the Commission in administering the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and the Newburyport Wetlands Ordinance. This position also assists the Commission with the oversight and management of conservation properties under the purview of the Conservation Commission. The Environmental Planner assists and/or directly leads various projects, programs or initiatives related to the city’s long-term goals of sustainability and resiliency, which is increasingly important to a coastal community like Newburyport. Work is performed under general supervision. The position reports to the Director of Planning and Development. Works cooperatively with other city departments including the Building department and department of Public Works to ensure compliance with state and local wetlands regulations.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, natural resource management or related degree.
  • At least three years’ experience in natural resources management or related field.
  • Must pass a CORI (Criminal Offend Records Information) check.
  • Valid drives license.

Hours and Salary

The regular work schedule consists of Monday through Friday; this is a 25-hour position schedule to be determined. The salary is between $45,851 and $56,329 depends on union status.

Securing this position is dependent on the results of a CORI check.
