• As established per City Ordinance and Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 115.
  • Serves as department head to Veterans’ Services Department, oversees department staff. Responsible for the Veterans’ Department Budget.
  • Assist veterans and/or their dependents and surviving spouse apply for benefits through the Veterans Benefit Administration (VBA) and with the Massachusetts Department of Veterans’ Services, as well as Administration of Chapter 115 benefits.
  • Other duties include knowledge of Veterans RE Tax Exemptions, Medicare, Medicaid and Supplemental Insurance Plans, Social Security benefits and other State Aid programs.
  • Responsible for organizing and running Veterans’ events, including planning parades for Memorial and Veterans Day and placing flags on veteran’s graves.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Per Brockton City Ordinance, Section 2-372, the Director of Veterans’ Services shall be a veteran.

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in human services, social services, public administration, public relations, or a related field from an accredited college or university or advanced training, and a minimum of five years of relevant experience, one year of which must include the supervision of personnel, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 115, as well as knowledge of federal laws pertaining to veterans and their dependents.  Working knowledge of the community and regional social service agencies and organizations offering programs and/or resources for veterans.  Ability to provide first line supervision.  Ability to communicate both in writing and verbally to a diverse group including but not limited to staff, citizens, department heads, state, local, and federal agencies.

Additional Requirements: Must successfully complete and pass a Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check.  Must possess a Massachusetts driver’s license
