The town of Andover’s Community Services Department seeks a dynamic professional to serve as its next Director of Recreation. The qualified candidate is a skilled leader, manager, communicator and consensus builder whose collaborative work style results in high performing teams, engaged citizenry and well-conceived program development and delivery. She/he/they is a skilled planner, highly organized and is a natural networker both within and outside of local government. In a highly visible role, the incumbent must have a natural proclivity to build community with stakeholders, staff and peers within the Community Services Department and beyond.

Candidates must have a demonstrable background in leading and managing people-focused organizations, preferably in the municipal context; knowledge of best practices in the field of recreation; and demonstrable knowledge of effective program development, budget management and program evaluation. Incumbent should possess a proven track record of building programs that meet the needs and interest of citizens. The successful candidate will be someone with a natural ability to interact, both formally through public speaking events and informally when visiting one of their multiple program locations, with youth and adults alike. Specific experience overseeing licensed after school care program strongly preferred.

She/he/they will be adept at building, managing and monitoring municipal budgets, evaluating program effectiveness, and communicating performance through the use of statistics and performance outcomes.

Duties require a bachelor’s degree, with a master’s degree in related field preferred, and five to seven years’ experience managing complex, service-focused organizations. The position will, by necessity, require frequent evening and/or weekend attendance at special events or to evaluate programs underway.
