Job Description

The town of Saugus seeks an experienced, collaborative professional to serve as Director of Planning and Economic Development. Reporting to the Town Manager, the Director provides leadership for municipal planning, land use, economic development, housing, and community development initiatives.

The Director will oversee long- and short-range planning; coordinate development review; provide professional planning and land-use guidance to appropriate municipal boards, commissions, officials, and departments; administer planning and economic development programs; pursue grants and funding opportunities; support business attraction and retention; and identify opportunities for responsible redevelopment and investment.

The Director will work collaboratively with Town officials, municipal departments, boards and commissions, consultants, businesses, property owners, developers, community organizations, regional agencies, and other public and private partners as necessary to advance the Town’s planning, development, and economic development priorities. Duties and responsibilities may evolve based upon the operational needs and priorities of the Town.

The position requires regular interaction with members of the public and attendance at evening meetings and public hearings as necessary.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in planning, public administration, economic development, or a related field and at least five years of progressively responsible experience in municipal planning, land use, economic development, or a related field. Municipal experience in Massachusetts, knowledge of Massachusetts land-use and zoning laws, grant-writing experience, GIS proficiency, and AICP certification are preferred.

The town offers a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Location: Town of Saugus (in-person position)

Schedule: Monday to Friday (full-time, non-union position)

Salary Range: $110,000 to $140,000 annually, +/- DPQ
