The city of Watertown is a thriving community in Greater Boston’s inner core with walkable neighborhoods, strong commercial corridors, and a growing team of professional planners. The city has a strong commitment to sustainability, with the passage of an ambitious climate plan, and three new net-zero schools. Watertown has recently completed a comprehensive plan update and will be working in the coming year to update zoning and complete an area plan for Watertown Square that will improve the public realm and implement the MBTA Communities Act. Watertown has seen significant new commercial growth in recent years, particularly in the life sciences sector. The city is seeking to expand and improve open space, support small businesses, provide additional housing opportunities, build a sustainable multimodal transportation network, prioritize walkable urban design solutions, and grow upon the commitment to thoughtful long-range planning and its implementation.
In the coming year, Watertown is growing its planning team in the Department of Community Development and Planning (DCPD). The team includes Planners working on current planning programs, transportation, housing, environmental protection, and arts/culture.
The city of Watertown is seeking to fill a key new role on this team, an individual who can lead the new Planning Division in the DCDP. The Planning Director will focus on all areas of the city’s planning efforts, including but not limited to, area plans, urban design, conservation and open space planning, transportation planning, economic development, community wellness, and zoning implementation and enforcement.
