The town of Braintree is seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Conservation Planner to support the mission of protecting and preserving the community’s natural resources. Reporting to the Director of Planning and Community Development, this professional-level role serves as staff to the Conservation Commission and ensures compliance with the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, local bylaws, and related environmental regulations.
Key responsibilities include reviewing wetland applications, conducting field inspections, managing public hearings, investigating violations, and maintaining conservation records. The Conservation Planner also coordinates open space stewardship, tree planting programs, floodplain management (FEMA CRS), aquatic weed treatments, and assists with grant writing and the town’s NPDES Stormwater permit. The position requires regular collaboration with other departments, state and federal agencies, and the public.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong knowledge of wetland science, regulatory compliance, GIS, and community outreach. A master’s degree in environmental science or a related field and three years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree with five years of experience, is required.
