The town of Sherborn is seeking qualified applicants for a 35 hours/week Conservation Administrator/Agent position.

Nestled amidst larger, more densely populated metrowest towns, Sherborn (population 4,500) prides itself on open space protection and wetlands conservation and considers them fundamental to its quality of life. The town’s abundant forest cover, undeveloped land, extensive wetlands, and careful regulation have protected its groundwater resources, on which residents depend for drinking water.

Job Summary:

Under the policy direction of the Conservation Commission, the Administrator/Agent oversees administration of the state Wetlands Protection Act, the local wetlands bylaw and associated regulations in an effective, efficient and legal manner; manages conservation land; supervises the commission’s 19 hours/week Administrative Assistant; and coordinates public education on natural resources and environmental issues. The Administrator/Agent also participates in commission meetings (typically the first and third Thursday evenings of each month).

Essential Job Functions:

  • Reviews wetlands-related applications/permits.
  • Provides frequent advice/assistance to members of the public.
  • Verifies wetland delineations, conducts project site visits, and investigates reports of potential violations.
  • Makes recommendations on permitting decisions and drafts.
  • Issues emergency certifications.
  • Participates in drafting wetlands bylaw/regulations revisions and policies.
  • Collaborates with town departments/committees on wetland, water supply and stormwater issues.
  • Manages commission office and finances, including accounts, budgets, files and phone/email communications.

Qualifications:

BA/BS in environmental sciences/related field and three years of experience administering wetlands protections laws, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of Mass. WPA and associated regulations, wetland boundary identification, erosion control and stormwater management.

Ability to work independently, with strong communication (oral and written) and customer service skills.
