The town of Auburn, 9-1-1 Emergency Communication Center (Center) is looking for a Director of Communications. The Center provides all emergency communication services for the town of Auburn, MA.

A suburban community located in Worcester County, Auburn is 16.4 sq. miles and has a permanent population of 16,684. A large commercial and industrial base makes for an estimated daytime population of 30,000 people. Along with five major highways that include Routes 12, 20, 290, 395 and the Mass Turnpike, Auburn has an estimated one million vehicles per day traveling our roadways.

The Director, who is considered a Division Head, reports directly and equally to the Police & Fire Chiefs or their designee. The Director is responsible for overseeing daily operations, including budgeting and personnel matters, as well as establishing and communicating the Center’s vision. The Director will provide administration and management of the Center, including its physical equipment both on and off site. The Center receives all 9-1-1 calls for the town of Auburn and serves as the central dispatch for the Police and Fire Rescue Department who, combined, answer approximately 30,000 calls for service annually. The Center provides Emergency Medical Dispatch.

Candidates must be certified as an enhanced 911 telecommunicator in accordance with the provisions of 560 CMR 5.00. It is desired that candidates for the position possess at least five years of managerial or supervisory experience in a public safety or emergency communications setting. Strong candidates will have proven leadership experience with a public safety communications center that serves police, fire and EMS functions as well as a working knowledge of county, town and fire district geography. It is desired that candidates hold a relevant associate’s degree (bachelor’s preferred) from an accredited college or university, or any combination of education and experience equivalent. A working knowledge of local emergency operations plans and procedures as well as the ability to remain calm and work well in tense or emergency situations is also essential.

The salary for the position is budgeted in fiscal year 2023 for $79,133. Benefits include, but are not limited to, participation in the County Retirement System, vacation and sick leave, group life insurance and medical insurance.
