The city of Worcester (population 185,000; FY21 budget: $721.8M) seeks a dynamic and experienced leader, with the ability to manage a large staff, for the position of Commissioner of Inspectional Services. The Commissioner is responsible for the divisions of Building & Zoning and Housing & Health Inspection ($4.1M total budget). The department is responsible for all building, wiring, and plumbing inspections as well as all housing and health inspections. The Commissioner supervises 63 full-time employees within the two divisions. Worcester seeks an experienced and skilled Commissioner excited by the opportunity to work collaboratively in a vibrant and forward-thinking city. This leadership position requires strong personnel management and communication skills. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent to a Master Craftsman knowledge level in a professional field or trade. Intensive knowledge of a specialized field, such as public health, engineering, public administration, or a specific trade as well as general knowledge of related fields, or broad-based knowledge of major municipal function activities, or any combination of education, training, and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job, is required.
