The City of Fall River, Engineering Department announces the following vacancy:

Title: City Engineer

Salary: Up to $90,000 annually

Hours: Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (flexibility to work beyond these hours)

Under the general direction of the City Administrator and the Mayor as delegated to the Director of Community Maintenance to supervise the work of a group of engineering division employees engaged in the field or office in connection with the construction, investigation, development and design of civil engineering projects.


Work involves planning, programming and application of civil engineering skills and knowledge to provide timely and efficient service to the people of the city regarding engineering projects of a public works nature; to be responsible for conformance to the city standards of all work performed under his/her direction which work requires the use of seasoned judgment in making technical decisions of some difficulty; to coordinate the work for which she/he is responsible with the work of other directors of public works operations, and to perform miscellaneous public work engineering as may be assigned.


A thorough knowledge of modern methods and practices of civil engineering as applied to public works projects; working knowledge of the practices, methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation, construction, maintenance and repair of public works; ability to plan, layout, coordinate, direct and supervise the work of a group of subordinates; an understanding and appreciation of basic human relations; ability to motivate other people toward positive action and unified effort; ability to establish and maintain cooperative and harmonious working relationships with other city employees and the general public; ability to take independent action and make judgment decisions in the absence of specific direction from higher authority; knowledge of job hazards and ability to observe and enforce observance of necessary safety precautions; ability to express self clearly; orally and in writing.

Knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws governing public works and public procurement, as well as state and federal regulations.

Applicants must have at least three years of full-time paid experience in public works duties directly involving the application of civil engineering construction, operation, and principles to the maintenance and repair of public works systems. At least one year of this experience must have been in a managerial capacity involving considerable administrative responsibility. The applicant must have graduated with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering. The applicant must also be a registered Professional Engineer by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
