The city of Watertown is seeking a highly motivated and skilled engineering professional to serve as the next City Engineer. Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the City Engineer performs advanced civil engineering work related to the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and management of municipal infrastructure and public works projects. The position oversees the City’s engineering, surveying, and mapping functions; supervises a staff of four full-time employees within the Engineering Division; and manages engineering consultants engaged in City projects. This is highly visible, senior position within the DPW. The successful candidate will possess strong project management, community engagement, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and stakeholders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, professional engineer certification or ability to qualify for PE designation within one year of appointment; Seven to ten years of experience in a municipal or public sector setting preferred; MCPPO certification strongly preferred; Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, Bluebeam, and Autocad platforms a necessity.

HOURS: This is a nonunion 40-hour-a-week position with hours Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This position is eligible for up to one day of remote work with Department Head and City Manager approval.

SALARY: The FY27 starting salary range is $148,918 to $204,433 (17 steps). Starting above Step 1 is dependent on
qualifications and experience.
