The town of Rye, NH seeks a knowledgeable, service-oriented Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer to support residents, contractors, and businesses in navigating codes while ensuring public safety and compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review permit applications and building plans for code compliance.
- Conduct field inspections and issue permits, certificates, and enforcement notices.
- Assist the public and advise boards on zoning and code matters.
- Investigate complaints, including zoning, wetlands, and health concerns.
- Maintain records, collect fees, prepare monthly reports.
- Lead improvements to online permitting (CivicPlus) and GIS systems.
- Collaborate across Town departments to ensure coordinated, effective service to the community. Building Inspector is expected to exercise reasonable judgment within his authority when deciding construction compliance with applicable local, state and national building codes and not unnecessarily rely on architectural, engineering or similar certifications (“stamps”) in determining such compliance.
Qualifications:
- Four-plus years relevant experience; ICC certification preferred.
- Strong knowledge of building and zoning codes; FEMA experience a plus.
- Ability to interpret plans, resolve conflicts, and work independently.
- Valid driver’s license required.
