Building Commissioner

The town of Lancaster is hiring for the position of full-time Building Commissioner. The town recently passed two zoning changes which allow for commercial and mixed-use development in town. The building and planning staff will be an integral part of this development and will work with town boards, committees, and leaders to shape the economic future of this historic town.

Responsibilities surround building and construction inspection work to ensure compliance with state and local regulations and statutes. The Commissioner oversees the issuance of all required permits applicable to building construction and reviews plans for zoning compliance. They also serve as the town’s Code and Zoning Enforcement Officer and participate in all matters which concern both the Planning and Zoning Boards in town.

Education and Experience: A minimum of two years’ experience as a construction supervisor (licensed), building commissioner or inspector, preferably in a municipal setting, required. Additionally, successful candidates must possess a thorough and complete understanding of Mass. State Building Code, ADA, and other construction standards outlined by code, bylaw and precedent. Ability to work harmoniously and courteously with members of the public and developers is essential as the Commissioner engages with staff, businesses, developers, and applicants daily; communications are expected to take place in courteous and tactful manners. Must possess a valid Massachusetts driver’s license. If not already certified as a Mass. Building Commissioner, per MGL Ch. 123, S3, must be able to pass all required examinations and become licensed within 18 months of hire.

Salary and Benefits: Salary range is $81,968-$108,930; starting salary expected up to $92,665 DOQE. The town of Lancaster has a competitive benefits package complete with PTO, health, dental and life insurances, deferred compensation plans and participants in the local retirement system.
