The town of Dennis with a population of 13,885 seeks dynamic individual with strong leadership, management and interpersonal skills for the position of Building Commissioner.

The Building Commissioner is responsible for the planning, organizing and supervision of inspection work to ensure compliance with federal, state and local building codes, zoning ordinance for two historic districts in the town and the Historic Commission, oversees the issuance of required permits applicable to building or construction, reviews plans for zoning compliance. The Building Commissioner serves as the town’s Zoning Enforcement Officer and Licensing Agent.

Candidates should have thorough knowledge of state building codes and other related codes, working knowledge of principal and practices of building construction and inspection, knowledge of historic districts and regulations. The Building Commissioner position requires the understanding, interpretation and the enforcement of state laws and local ordinances.

The minimum qualifications for the position include a college degree in a field related to building construction or design; 5 to 7 years of prior work experience preferably in the supervision of building construction or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience to perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires a valid motor operator’s license, valid Construction Supervisors Certification, valid Local Building Inspector’s Certification, preferred State Certification as an Inspector of Buildings/Building Commissioner. Must obtain State Certification as an Inspector of Buildings/Building Commissioner within 18 months of appointment.
