Job Description
Brookline seeks a Building Commissioner to lead the town’s building operations in a dynamic, fast‑paced municipal environment. This role oversees Code Enforcement/Inspectional Services, Public Buildings, and Capital Projects, including construction, renovation, building and zoning code enforcement, and facilities maintenance for town and school buildings. The town is seeking a strong, forward‑thinking leader with the technical expertise, sound judgment, and effective communication skills needed to evaluate and improve organizational structure and operations while ensuring high standards of safety, compliance, and service delivery within a multifaceted municipal environment.
Key responsibilities include directing building, electrical, plumbing, gas, and zoning enforcement; administering maintenance of town and school facilities; collaborating with sustainability and public works teams on energy efficiency and environmental initiatives; overseeing compliance reporting; reviewing building plans; leading enforcement actions; managing departmental records and permitting systems; supervising staff; and preparing and defending departmental budgets.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in building construction or design, or ten years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Required certifications: Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License (Unrestricted), State Certification as Inspector of Buildings or Building Commissioner, MCPPO, and a valid driver’s license.
Starting salary range: $165,756–$173,327 with comprehensive benefits.
