The town of Dighton is seeking qualified applicants to serve as the Building Commissioner. The Building Commissioner shall work 19 hours/week. Duties include (but are not limited to) administrative, and professional inspection work related to the enforcement and interpretation of the state building code, the Zoning Act (MGL 40A), the town of Dighton’s General and Zoning Bylaws, the Architectural Access Board Regulations (MGL Chapter 22, Section 13A), and all other applicable codes or regulations; all other related work as required. The Commissioner serves as the town’s Zoning Compliance Officer and Code Administration Officer, enforcing all applicable laws, bylaws, codes or regulations. The position reports during emergency situations and is requested to appear at meetings held during the evening from time to time.

Applicant must possess thorough knowledge of the quality and strength of materials and methods of building construction, fire prevention, light, ventilation and safe egress; general knowledge of other equipment and materials essential for safety, comfort and convenience of the occupants of a building or structure. And a thorough knowledge of the state building code, local zoning by-laws and other applicable state statutes, rules and regulations, etc.

Must have the ability to read and interpret technical information, Massachusetts General Laws and regulations and engineering criteria and design information and to communicate information to the general public. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and plans. Ability to enforce regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially. Ability to deal appropriately, professionally and timely with the general public and members of the building community. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

High school diploma required, supplemented by related vocation training, plus five years of experience in the supervision of building construction or design; Bachelor’s degree in related field desirable; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
