The town of Ayer seeks a qualified, dedicated professional for the position of Building Commissioner. The Building Commissioner performs professional, administrative, and technical work and is responsible for the management of operations for the town’s Building department and Inspectional Services. The Building Commissioner is responsible for the enforcement of the building and inspectional codes in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations to include, but not limited to the town of Ayer’s Zoning and Nuisance bylaws.

Key responsibilities include reviewing construction plans, inspecting new and existing buildings for code compliance, issuing permits and certificates of occupancy and serving as the town’s Zoning Enforcement Officer. The position is also responsible for investigating complaints, maintaining accurate records, preparing budgets, and working collaboratively with municipal departments and boards. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of building materials, construction methods, and state regulations. The position requires exceptional communication skills, the ability to interpret regulations tactfully, and the capacity to manage both administrative and fieldwork responsibilities. Minimum requirements: bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least five years of progressively responsible experience in the field of building construction and/or inspectional services or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior municipal building inspectional experience is desirable. Applicants must possess a valid Massachusetts Building Inspector’s Certification and be able to obtain a Massachusetts Building Commissioner’s Certification within 18 months of appointment. Possession of a valid Class D Driver’s License and the ability to pass a CORI required.

Full-time salaried position with health insurance and generous municipal benefits package. Salary Range: $93,144 – $97,859 DOQ. Position is provided a town vehicle for work purposes.
