The town of Braintree seeks a highly-motivated attorney to serve as Assistant Town Solicitor. Under the direction of the Town Solicitor, the Assistant Town Solicitor will represent the town in legal proceedings and quasi-judicial or administrative proceedings before courts and regulatory agencies and to serve as legal counsel to the Mayor, department heads and other town officials. Duties include conducting legal research, preparing legal opinions, preparing responses to public records requests and drafting and reviewing municipal contracts. Specific areas of responsibility include municipal land use and zoning, real estate acquisition/disposition and development, state ethics, open meeting law, public records law, public procurement, municipal finance, labor and employment and other matters associated with municipal law.

Minimum Requirements: J.D. with at least three to five years relevant legal experience. Experience in land use matters, including special permits, subdivisions, zoning enforcement, and wetlands law, plus public records and open meeting law at the municipal level preferred. Admitted to practice in Massachusetts and admitted or eligible to practice in federal court. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, possess excellent judgment and have strong research and writing skills. Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment are also required. Attendance at night meetings, including Town Council, Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals may be required. All work is to be performed at Braintree Town Hall.
