• Assists in the direction of all operations of the main and branch libraries
  • Responsible for the overall staff schedule and works directly with library department heads with the creation and implementation of the library schedule
  • Convening regular meetings to ensure that areas of common concerns are addressed
  • Responding to patron complaints, patron suggestions, and manages problems with patron behavior including implementation of library’s progressive disciplinary process
  • Interpreting library and city policies for library staff and patrons
  • Provides reference services as needed
  • Responsible for all computer equipment, peripherals, applications, networks and training
  • Represents the library at computer network meetings and other cooperative meetings as assigned
  • Coordinates development and maintains library’s Web site
  • Assists in the preparation of the budget including developing financial and statistical and annual reporting and information presentations and packets for Trustees and other stakeholders
  • Participates and makes recommendations in planning and developing library services and activities with the Library Director and the library supervisory staff
  • Participates in the recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of supervisory staff
  • Helps to resolve interdepartmental conflicts
  • Assists Library Director in matters of negotiations, grievances, and arbitration proceedings involving the Brockton Public Library Employees’ Association including but not limited to Evaluating employee performance, recommending remedial assistance, disciplinary action, and merit or position upgrades
  • Assumes full charge in the absence of the Library Director
  • Other duties as assigned by the Library Director

QUALIFICATIONS

A master’s degree from an accredited graduate school of library and information science; a minimum of five years of successful professional work, at least three of which have been in a position of senior management responsibility; public library experience preferred. In exceptional instances, specialized education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for part of the educational requirement.

A broad background in librarianship; comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques and trends of library services; Understanding of the role of technology in supporting patron learning and library operations; Demonstrated organizational and managerial skills necessary to lead, manage, manage change and motivate staff; Ability to plan, organize and administer a department; Knowledge of human resources management principles and practices; Experience developing creative and innovative programs and services; Excellent problem-solving skills; Effective oral and written communication skills; Demonstrated commitment to community service; Desire and ability to serve the public with friendliness, tact, and diplomacy; Desire and ability to work in a large, urban public library that serves a wide diversity of people and promotes equity, diversity and inclusion; Proven leadership ability; Ability to set own priorities for work to be done, and to meet deadlines; Necessary attributes: maturity, tact, diplomacy, resourcefulness, creativity, initiative, adaptability, flexibility, dependability, ability to work well under pressure, ability to delegate work effectively.
