The town of York, a coastal community comprised of the villages of Cape Neddick, York Harbor, York Village and York Beach, is accepting applications for an Assistant Code Enforcement Officer.

The Assistant Code Enforcement Officer is responsible for processing permit applications and performing onsite inspections; enforcing Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code (MUBEC), plumbing codes, and federal, state, and municipal zoning ordinances; work closely with citizens, landowners, developers, attorneys, engineers, and other interested parties seeking town planning and development information; and creates and maintains notes, records, and reports.

The preferred candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • A two-year certificate or four-year degree in a community development or construction related field or equivalent field experience.
  • Must possess appropriate inspections licenses for direct inspections work performed or can obtain the necessary inspection licenses within one year of date of hire.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Master electrician license desired.

The preferred qualities of the candidate are:

  • Tenacious, hardworking, and works well in a team.
  • Able to work well with the public, coworkers, and public officials.
  • Self sufficient, and able to maintain a steady day-to-day schedule.
  • Ability to understand planning ordinances, zoning laws, and codes.
  • Ability to conduct independent research.

The position is a full-time, exempt, non-bargaining, position and may require attendance at evening meetings. Starting salary range is $61,282.45-$70,495.10 dependent upon experience and qualifications. The town of York follows a salary step schedule which provides an estimated 5% increase plus COLA every year for the first three years of employment and then every third year subsequent to that. The town also offers a benefit package including health insurance, life insurance, and two retirement plan options, a generous paid time off policy, and 13 paid holidays.
