The town of Abington is seeking a skilled and highly motivated Treasurer/Collector to join our municipal leadership team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced finance professional who is committed to public service and fiscal excellence.

The Treasurer will work under the general supervision of the Town Manager.

Under administrative direction, the employee works from policies, goals, and objectives; establishes short-range plans and objectives, departmental performance standards and assumes direct accountability for department results; consults with the supervisor only were clarification, interpretation, or exception to policy may be required or as requested by the supervisor. The employee exercises control in the development of departmental policies, goals, objectives, and budgets and is expected to exercise whatever means are necessary to resolve conflicts that cannot be addressed at the department level.

As the Treasurer/Collector you will oversee the collection and accounting of all town receivables, including real estate and personal property taxes, motor vehicle taxes, utility payments, and various municipal fees. You will manage the deposit and investment of collected funds and ensure that all operating, debt and capital obligations are met efficiently and on schedule.

The ideal candidate must have the following: a bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance or related field and five to seven years of responsible experience in financial management, cash management, and/or accounting, or any equivalent combination of education and experience, including two years of supervisory experience. You must also be certified as a Treasurer Collector under the MTCA guidelines.

Knowledge of general accounting, bookkeeping, accounts payable / receivable, benefits, municipal finance laws, including GAAP. UMAS, and Mass General Laws and bank reconciliation; knowledge of Vadar or applicable tax / accounting software programs

Ability to multi-task and manage conflict. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to understand and explain various types of correspondence, reports, and media to explain and/ or train others. Ability to maintain good public relations and to maintain effective collaborative working relationships with Town departments, department heads, fellow employees, officials, and the public and to respond in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently.

Starting salary of $90,500 to $103,500 to be negotiated based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, education, and current certifications.
